| Knowledge Share July 13th – 18th 2026 The event centres on St. Bartholomew’s Church, featuring experts in ancient building techniques currently working within conservation. They are joined by this year’s travelling Scholars and Fellows from The Protection Of Ancient Buildings(SPAB). The Scholars are practitioners, architects, structural engineers, and surveyors, actively working in conservation. This year’s Scholar cohort specifically includes two structural engineers and two architects. Scholars travel the country for nine months, studying a wide range of buildings, from small vernacular structures to prominent historic properties The Fellows are skilled craftspeople with deep expertise. This year’s Fellows include a millwright carpenter, a stonemason, and two lime plasterers. Both Scholars and Fellows are eager to undertake practical, hands-on tasks at the site. We want to engage with you all with an open invitation to attend three primary public-facing sessions: Tuesday evening – July 14th: a sketching evening, materials will be supplied. Inspired by William Morris’s approach, the session emphasises personal interpretation over replication, encouraging participants to draw what they genuinely see or wish to express rather than “manufactured” uniformity. The ethos is inclusive, no formal art training required and intended to build confidence and celebrate individual perspectives. Fun for all whilst chatting to your friends. Thursday morning – July 16th: A visit to William Blyth’s handmade roof tile factory: limited places so please email contact@stbartstrust.org.uk to book your place, participants must arrange their own transport, although we may be able to arrange a car share, the address is Far Ings Road, Barton-Upon-Humber, North Lincolnshire DN18 5RF and we will meet in the carpark at 10:00am. Afternoon follow-up: after the visit, participants return to the church for a hands-on session identifying clay products (e.g. tiles, pantiles, bricks) and how to recognise materials present at St. Bartholomew’s. Thursday evening: a Cheese & Wine evening, where Scholars and Fellows explain the work undertaken at the church and introduce the SPAB Scholarship and Fellowship programs. The same evening is intended to host a “surgery” session: an open Q&A for residents on building conservation. This “surgery” is explicitly not limited to owners of older houses; questions from residents of newer homes such as the pros and cons of cavity wall insulation in different building types are welcome. Please send an email to contact@stbartstrust.org.uk stating Cheese & Wine and number in party if you intend coming. This event will be held in the Parish Rooms from 7:00pm. Saturday – July 18th : a general open day from 09:30 at the church, allowing people to visit, observe, ask questions, and participate across the day. Everyone is welcome to any of the open sessions, with the caveat of the tile factory visit. Please do visit to see what we are doing and don’t hesitate to tell us what you think.
